CSK vs PBKS: Match Preview

CSK Hangs On

The Chennai Super Kings are enduring their worst season in terms of form and results, on the brink of becoming the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025. This campaign has brought lows the five-time champions have never seen before. For the first time in their history, CSK have suffered five consecutive defeats in a single IPL season, including four losses at Chepauk, a record-breaking low after a decade of dominance at home. With only 2 wins in 9 matches, they currently sit at the bottom of the points table in 10th place.

However, amidst the struggles, there are a few positives. This season has seen the emergence of CSK's next-gen talents  Noor Ahmed, Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and latest entrant Dewald Brevis. As Captain MS Dhoni stated, if CSK fails to qualify this year, their focus will shift to building for the next season, and that process has already begun. These young players have shown promise, and with five matches left, CSK will look to solidify a core group for future campaigns.

The major negatives have been CSK’s middle-order woes and their inability to clear the boundary. They’ve had the lowest powerplay run rate this season, struggled to post or chase totals above 180 runs, and suffered from highly inconsistent batting. These issues have significantly diminished their chances this season. While qualification is still mathematically possible, CSK now relies on other teams' results. It’s not too late to climb up the table, and the Super Kings will be hoping to finish the season strong.

Punjab Kings Hoping for a Turnaround

The Punjab Kings started their season with promise, impressing fans with heroic chases and defending the lowest total in IPL 2025 so far. Captain Shreyas Iyer has led from the front, with his consistent form providing stability. Their top order has been a cornerstone of success. Priyansh Arya has been explosive, while Prabhsimran Singh has stepped up whenever Arya has fallen short, forming a reliable opening duo.

In the bowling department, Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen have led the charge effectively, well supported by Yuzvendra Chahal. Nehal Wadhera has also made valuable contributions in crunch moments, further boosting the team’s depth.

On the flip side, the major concern has been the underperformance of their Australian duo, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell. Both have failed to deliver so far, but a return to form might be on the cards at Chepauk, where they have strong individual records. With just two wins in their last five games, PBKS currently sits 5th on the points table. However, they have a solid record at Chepauk, having defeated CSK in their last two visits, and will now aim for a third straight win at this venue.
