Rohit Sharma was stumped by Tom Latham off Rachin Ravindra

After a good start chasing 252 in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 final, India lost the wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the middle-overs. Rohit and Gill added a century-stand in the first 20 overs giving the team a fast start. By the end of the 30th over, they are 136/3.

Rohit brought up his 58th ODI fifty (76 off 83) while Shubman Gill (31 off 50) was happy to play the second fiddle. The run-scoring rate was very good in the first 10 overs.

Since the spinners came on, they managed to slow the run-scoring in the middle overs. Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner first dismissed Gill who was caught at covers by Glenn Phillips who took another stunner in the tournament.

India Lose Gill, Kohli And Rohit In Quick Succession

After Santner dismissed Gill in the 19th over, Michael Bracewell took the big wicket of Virat Kohli (1 off 2) in the 20th over. The big wicket of Kohli even forced Rohit to take a step back and play with caution.

However, with the pressure and the asking rate going up, Rohit Sharma lost his wicket trying to run down against Rachin Ravindra in the 27th over of the Indian innings. That was a body blow to the Indian run-chase in the middle-overs with still over 100 runs to get.

All of India's hard work in the first 15 overs was undone by the Kiwis who broke through thrice between the 19th and the 30th over. Shreyas Iyer who has been India's best player of spin in this tournament is bating in the middle at the moment along with Axar Patel. Before this match, he has scored over 500 runs against the Kiwis in ODIs at an average of 70.37 and striking over 100. India still require over 100 runs to win in the last 20 overs with the pitch starting to grip and turn.
