Shubman Gill scripted history as he became the first Indian Test captain to win a Test match at Edgbaston. India won their first Test match at the venue in nine attempts with their 336-run win over England.
The win helped India bag their first points in the WTC 2025-27 points table and also bring the five-match Test series to parity. Gill scored 430 runs in the match therefore becoming the second batter with the most runs in a test match.
He also became the Indian batter with most runs in a single Test match surpassing Virat Kohli's knocks against Sri Lanka in New Delhi in 2017. Kohli had scored 243 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 50 runs in the second innings.
Kohli Records Gill Can Break In Test Cricket
Shubman Gill has already got his name in the list of top-scorers in Test cricket for India with his knock of 269 runs against England at Edgbaston. He surpassed names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar in the list. Only Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Karun Nair and Virender Sehwag is ahead of him. Sehwag with his 319 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008 is India's highest individual scorer in Test cricket.
Meanwhile, in this series so far, Shubman Gill has already amassed 585 runs after just two Tests including two centuries and a double century. With him replacing Virat Kohli at number four, here are the three Kohli records Gill can surpass in Test cricket in the future.
Most Double Centuries In Test Cricket
Kohli has seven Test double centuries followed by Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag with six double tons. Cheteshwar Pujara has three Rahul Dravid has two, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman have one each. Will getting into the rhythm of scoring big runs, he can certainly topple Kohli in that list. He and Sachin have double centuries in ODI and Test cricket for India.
Most Hundreds By An Indian Test Captain In SENA Countries
Kohli is also leading the race as the Indian captain with most Test centuries in SENA Countries. He has seven suck centuries. Gill with his historic knock at Edgbaston has now scored three test centuries as captain. He just has Mohammed Azharuddin (5) and Virat Kohli ahead of him. Gill can overtake Kohli in this list too over time.
Most Test Centuries In A Calendar Year
Kohli was at the peak of his powers with the bat during 2017 and 2018, In both those years, he scored five Test centuries each. He averaged 75.64 and 55.08 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Shubman Gill has already scored three centuries in the first half of the season. With India scheduled to play Test matches against West Indies and South Africa later this year, Gill can surely surpass Kohli if he keeps batting the way he is.
