New Chandigarh Stadium to Host First-Ever International Match in India vs Australia Women's ODI Series

New Chandigarh Stadium to Host First International Match in India vs Australia Women's ODI Series

International cricket is all set to make its grand debut in New Chandigarh this September. The newly-built Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium in Mullanpur will host the first two matches of the India-Australia women’s ODI series.

The series, initially scheduled to be held entirely in Chennai, has seen a shift in venues due to ongoing upgrades at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. As a result, New Chandigarh will now host the first two ODIs, scheduled for September 14 and 17, after which the action will move to Delhi for the third and final match on September 20.

This is a moment of pride for the Mullanpur stadium, which until now has only been used for domestic fixtures and as a home base of Punjab Kings (PBKS) during India Premier League (IPL). For the local fans and the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), it is a long-awaited reward.

New Chandigarh Stadium to Gets Its First Taste of International Cricket with India vs Australia Women's ODI Series

The PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh has been operational since early 2024. It has hosted two IPL seasons so far. With a seating capacity of around 38,000, modern facilities and a picturesque backdrop, the venue has received largely positive reviews.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that this is the first time the Chandigarh region will host an international women’s match since 2016, when a few ICC Women’s T20 World Cup games were played at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. For nearly a decade, the area has waited to welcome back top-tier women’s cricket.

The upcoming ODIs are expected to draw large crowds, especially with Australia being the opposition, a team that continues to set the benchmark in the women’s game. For India, the series will be a vital dress rehearsal ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup, which will begin later this year.

The women’s ODIs will only be the beginning of New Chandigarh’s international journey. The stadium has also been pencilled in to host a T20I between India and South Africa in December, as part of the men’s team home season.

Mullanpur to Not Host Women's ODI World Cup Final

There were strong reports that the Mullanpur Stadium will host the final of the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 30 to November 2.

However, as per the final Women's ODI World Cup 2025 schedule, the stadium has not been included among the venues for the tournament.

Matches will be held in Bengaluru (M. Chinnaswamy Stadium), Guwahati (ACA Stadium), Indore (Holkar Stadium), and Visakhapatnam (ACA-VDCA Stadium). Pakistan’s fixtures have been moved out of India. The team is scheduled to play at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
