Mohammed Shami of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) narrowly missed Jofra Archer of Rajasthan Royals (RR) unwanted record of the most expensive IPL figures by just one run. Shami leaked a massive 75 runs against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad. Incidentally, Archer was also thrashed for 76 runs in his four overs at this very ground by SRH.
Not every day do bowlers have a field day. Some days even the best bowlers like Archer, Shami, Cummins, and Trent Boult, also go for a lot of runs. If the pitch is as flat as the Uppal surface, then God help bowlers. The game between SRH vs PBKS saw almost 500 runs being scored.
Here at Criczop, we take a look at the top five most expensive IPL spells.

Jofra Archer 0 for 76 vs SRH, 2025
Playing his first IPL game after a gap of a year, pacer Jofra Archer had an unforgettable outing as he was clobbered by SRH batters for fun. With Uppal's pitch as flat as the road, the speedster did not get any swing or seam movement and kept banging the ball short. SRH batters like Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Ishan Kishan pounced on the short-pitched bowling and entertained a loyal SRH fanbase.
First, Head smashed the RR pacer for a 23-run over, which also included one extra ball. Later, Kishan whacked him for 20 runs over. SRH posted 286 runs onboard, and Archer leaked the most runs for RR bowlers that day.
Mohammad Shami 0 for 75 vs PBKS, 2025
There is no better exponent of swing and seam in India than Mohammed Shami. However, against PBKS's relatively young batting lineup, Shami's experience was gone for a toss. PBKS opener Prabhsimran Singh made his intentions clear by taking on the SRH pacer in the first over itself, as three boundaries were scored. Prabhsmiran's partner, Priyansh Arya, went one step ahead by smashing Shami for back-to-back sixes and followed up with a four and a six.
In the third over, Shami gave 11 runs and thought he would finish well in the fourth over as well, but Marcus Stoinis had other plans as he struck four sixes in his last over.
Mohit Sharma 0 for 73 vs DC, 2024
Mohit Sharma, who is known to be a good death-over bowler, had a horrible outing against a fiery DC batting lineup. The pacer was introduced by GT captain Shubman Gill in the 12th over. Rishabh Pant welcomed Mohit with a four and continued to attack him in his subsequent overs. However, Pant reserved his best for the last as he smashed Mohit in the last over for 6, 4, 6, 6, and 6, making it the most expensive spell in the history of IPL at that time.
Basil Thampi 0 for 70 vs RCB 2018
In a typical batting-friendly surface at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a young Basil Thampi of SRH endured a dreadful night. Moeen Ali first welcomed Thampi into the attack with consecutive sixes, which gave the other batters a message to take on the SRH pacer for the rest of the spell. AB de Villers, Sarfaraz Khan, and Colin de Grandhomme answered the call and smacked Thampi for five fours and six sixes, resulting in a forgettable night for the Kerala pacer.

Yash Dayal 0 for 69 vs KKR 2023
A match every cricket lover and certainly KKR fans will forever remember. The game was gone for all money when 29 runs were needed in the last over. Rinku Singh, though, had other ideas, as the southpaw wrote his script to etch his name in the record books. Dayal, who up until that point had okayish figures, was smacked for five sixes as Rinku stunned GT and their fans in Ahmedabad and won an impossible game for KKR.
